In a seesaw, back-and-forth game in Oakland last night, Michael Cuddyer scored the tying run from second base on a wild pitch. While replays were pretty clear, home plate umpire Mike Muchlinski punched him out. Naturally, Cuddyer wen berserk and Twins Skipper Ron Gardenhire had to restrain him. It seems to me, that if the replay rules allow for umpires to stop the game and review video to verify a meaningless 1st inning home run, they should also allow for umpires to review a potentially game outcome changing play as well. Cuddyer was safe and he had tied the game; no one disputes that. But MLB needs to figure out a way for this play to be reviewed. Maybe because of this they’ll finally get their act together and implement a functioning policy on instant replay.
