In their first game back after Josh Hancock’s death, the St. Louis Cardinals lost 7-1 to the Brewers in Milawaukee. In the sixth inning with one out, Albert Pujols took a 2-2 picth from Brewer pitcher and former teamate Jeff Suppan, tossed his bat and lumbered down to first base. Neither Suppan or catcher Johnny Astrada seemed to notice, homeplate umpire Dan Lassogna didn’t notice, the 7 other Brewers in the field didn’t notice, and neither did the 40,000 plus fans on hand. So, how often do umps lose track of the pitch count, and why can’t I stop thinking about Leslie Nielson/Enrico Palazzo as I write this?
